Pre-departure information

The research station is in a remote location, surrounded by rainforest and all that lives in it. Most risks derive from not recognising threats, rather than from an abundance of potential threats. Station staff will point out any dangers or risks the jungle may offer and can provide basic medical advice.

However, to be prepared for the unlikely case of injury or illness, all visitors must come with a complete first aid kit, containing at least the following items:

A complete kitlist can be accessed here.

During the application process, you will be asked to fill in and sign a health declaration and show a vaccination history. It is important to seek your doctor's advice prior to departure particularly to:

  1. Ensure you are not allergic or have any adverse reactions to any medication you intend to take with you
  2. Enquire which antibiotics are most appropriate (gut infections are not uncommon but easily treated)
  3. Determine which are the most appropriate antimalarial tablets for you, bearing in mind the effective antimalarials for this area of are Atovaquine (eg Malarone), Mefloquine (eg Lariam), and Doxycycline.

Prior to your visit, you will be required to fill out a health declaration form signed by your GP, as well as providing proof of appropriate travel or medical insurance.

Before you begin any preparations, please ensure you have contacted us at info@timburi.org, to begin the volunteer application appropriately.
